Kevin Gardner writes about spirituality, yoga and all things mindfulness.
1) Get Back to Nature
Spending time outdoors is one of the best and most effective ways of connecting with your inner self. In addition to helping you relax, going for a hike in the woods or walking on the beach can improve your health, as well. There’s no special trick to it. Just take a walk and let your mind go.
2) Explore Your Dreams
Here, we’re not talking about the dreams you have at sleep, but your vision for your future. Whether it’s a hobby or a professional pursuit, chase that dream and let it lead you on a new journey. Along the way, you’ll find that you’re experiencing a stronger sense of purpose and you’ll more fully come to understand your inner nature.
3) Seek Inspiration or Help
There’s no reason this has to be a solo journey, though it certainly can be, if you prefer. Sometimes it helps to talk it out with a friend or a spiritual leader in your community. Other times, it’s helpful to simply listen to something that will keep you motivated, such as your favorite music or a 365 daily devotional recording. Seek out whatever motivates you to connect with your inner spirit.
4) Be Open to the Writing on the Wall
Listen to your intuition and follow your heart, but also be open to the signs around you. Sometimes the universe has a way of guiding us, if we just pay attention to the messages it’s sending. Whether it’s the same song you keep hearing or a recurring dream, take the time to consider what it might be telling you.
5) Feed the Body
By giving your physical body what it needs, you’ll be opening yourself up to your spiritual side, as well. Exercise and vigorous physical activity release endorphins in the brain, which are those “feel good” hormones that elevate your mood after a good workout. Those sensations won’t just encourage you to engage in more physical activity; they will also encourage you to express your spirituality.
6) Meditate and Practice Yoga Often
Like many other suggestions, these two activities have physical and mental benefits on the body. Our physical and mental states are deeply intertwined and connected to our spiritual selves, so be helping one aspect of your person, you can benefit others. Taking the time to relax and meditate or practice yoga will give your subconscious mind the opportunity to explore your spiritual being. This is one reason you come away from meditation and yoga feeling refreshed and invigorated.
7) Learn About Different Philosophies
It may help to learn about philosophy in general, read about different religions, and explore new cultures. Exposing yourself to a diversity of thought in this way can help you connect to a way of thinking that really speaks to your inner self. It can lead you to a philosophy that helps you to feel fulfilled, or it might cause you to re-examine your own beliefs and develop your own path. If nothing else, it will give you a deeper appreciation for the beliefs and practices of other cultures.
8) Be Silent
Sometimes, it helps to just get away from everything and everyone. Spend time in complete silence, so your thoughts are the only sounds you sense. This can often do more for you than anything else and can help you more fully appreciate your sense of spirit. Maybe your spirituality doesn’t need to be awakened; it just needs to be recognized. Reconnecting with your inner spirituality is important for overall healthier living. Just being able to get in touch with that part of yourself can help you feel less stressed and can declutter your mind. There are no hard rules for being open to your spiritual self. Just let your heart guide you.
