People want to fall back into old habits of binge-watching Netflix, eat chips and drink soft drinks. Losing weight requires a lot of commitment throughout the tenure.

Looking for Shortcuts

Losing weight is a lifestyle change and not a one-time activity. People often try to lose weight by taking weight-loss supplements and crash dieting. Initially, they will even do enormous amounts of strenuous exercises without even taking a day off. As soon as they stop these unsustainable activities, they will likely gain back the weight they had lost.

These shortcuts are not sustainable in the long-term. A person must be willing to invest time and energy to make lifelong changes to their lifestyle if they want to lose weight and maintain it.

Difficulty with Prioritization

In today’s era, everyone is busy with their daily routines. A person usually gets stuck in the office, socializing, studies and catering to family needs. We’ve all heard that greatness is a mindset. We’ve seen the “Dream It – Believe It – Achieve It” motivational posters. And it’s at least partially true… but not totally.

Greatness is not a mindset or a system of beliefs or even the physical manifestation of your hopes and dreams. No, greatness is a habit. More accurately, it is a series of habits built on the backs of one another. If all it took to be great was to believe yourself capable of greatness, we would all be phenomenal.

Spoiler alert: We, by and large, are not. But we can be.

In his 2019 Rainmaker session (which he entered through the cloud of a fog machine, obviously), PatientPop’s VP of Inside Sales, Kevin Dorsey, shared some important habits to create in order to get closer to greatness in sales and in life. Below is just a small sampling of the knowledge he dropped.

7 Ways to Get From Good to Great

1. Write Down Your “Why”

Write down 5 reasons you want to be great. Be honest with yourself – this isn’t for anyone else. Read these 5 reasons every single day for 30 days. The first part of designing a system for creating the habits that lead to greatness is the recognition of your desire to succeed.

Read and reread your reasons – they are the fuel to your fire.

2. Go Big

This may sound obvious, but greatness doesn’t stop when it hits its quota. To be great at what you do, you have to blow past benchmarks on a regular basis. If your goal is to make 70 calls a day, make 90. If it’s to send 50 emails a day, send 100.

This will slingshot you into the experience you need to be the best. It will also show your manager that you’re serious about success. Greatness is a habit, but you also have to want it.

It’s worth noting that if you’re hitting your marks (your new, higher marks – not your old, busted marks), don’t focus 100% on the end result. If you make 90 calls in a day with intent and get zero responses, that’s still a good day. Do it again tomorrow.

3. Focus on Yourself

In every aspect of your life, be it work or home, managing relationships is most important. No good relationship – business or personal – has ever been completely smooth sailing. If and when you hit a rough patch, ask yourself if you are doing everything you possibly can to make it run smoothly. Chances are you’ll find some room for improvement within yourself.

Act on it. Everyone appreciates an effort, and you’ll find that the farther you go, the more likely it is that your partners will help too. Greatness demands good partnerships. Be a good partner.

4. Seek Experience

Kevin says he hates the word “coachable.” Why? Because it implies that you need to be sought out for instruction. That’s not going to happen unless you’re in trouble. Understand that you have limitations – even if you can’t immediately see them – and seek experience to help you get better. Ask your managers how you can improve. Find a mentor. Look for those who have what you want and do what they do.

Experience comes with time. You can work for 15 years to get 15 years of knowledge… or you can find someone with 15 years of experience and ask them to tell you what they know. It’s like time travel without the possibility of being vaporized into nonexistence.

Be in the company of joyful, upbeat individuals who share your beliefs and aspirations. Your ethically compatible friends will motivate you to achieve your goals. They promote self-confidence in you. When assistance is required, they are there to provide it.


Are Considerate


Recognize and respect individuals for who they are and where they are in life. Show them respect for who they are. Engage them with a heart of kindness and generosity. When you can, lend a hand without attempting to influence the other person. Make an effort to make everyone you encounter’s a day better.


Problem-solvers in a Creative Way


Don’t wallow in your own misery. As soon as you encounter a problem, start working on a solution. Do not allow the setbacks to impact your attitude; rather, consider each new difficulty as a chance to transform your life for the better. Learn to trust your intuition; it nearly always has the right answer.


They Mind Their Own Business


Focus on building the life you want for yourself. Take care of your family and yourself. Don’t worry too much about what others are doing or saying. Avoid engaging in rumours or judging people. Be impartial. Everyone, including you, has the freedom to live their own life however they want.

8 Habits of People Who Thrive in Crisis

As a kid, my dad sometimes took me fishing in his small rusty tin boat. Sometimes, in the middle of the lake, he’d put duct tape over a leak to keep the water at bay until we got back to shore. He used to say that boats don’t sink from the water around them. They sink from the water that gets in them.

I’ve drawn on that saying many times, particularly during life’s stormy times when I’ve felt like I might be pulled under by the fear and negativity swirling around me. Like back in March.


No irony was lost on me that the week that my new book was released was the same week my husband was hospitalized for COVID-19 and I was put in a two-week quarantine and my book tour and much of my income stream for 2020 was canceled. Talk about road testing my own advice!

So I kept heeding Dad’s words… “Margie, don’t give what’s going on around you the power to determine what’s going on inside you.”

Of course this is easier said than done. But it’s not impossible. It all boils down to habits. Those well-practiced patterns of thought and behavior that help us take full ownership for our internal state—“the shape of our boat”—so that when dark clouds gather overhead, we can show up as the person we most aspire to be. And when we fall (as we all do), we can quickly pick ourselves back up.

To that end, here are eight habits that set apart the people who thrive through crisis, enabling them to weather life’s storms better and emerge from them better off.

1. Start with who.

I know Simon Sinek said to start with why, but sometimes our why can be illusive. In which case, start with who. Take five minutes to write down the traits of the person you want to be right now and the story you want to tell about how you showed up during this turbulent time—in your work, your family and your broader community. When so much is uncertain, look within yourself for the certainty you can’t find elsewhere.

There is a whole lot outside your control right now. I get that. But when you decide to take control of how you show up in the world, you empower yourself to handle everything else better.

I am committed to embodying purpose, gratitude, grace and generosity through this turbulent time. What about you?

2. Practice daily rituals with radical self-discipline.

Resilience isn’t what you have, it’s what you do.In tough times, it’s important to double down on the practices and rituals that help you bring your “best self” to life—physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Set your alarm, move your body, eat well, prioritize your schedule, take time to read, stay connected. The small practices you do each day can make a profound difference as you navigate uncertain times.

3. Stand guard on your energy.

Emotions are contagious. It’s easy to let the fears of others become your own. So be diligent to set firm boundaries to keep the negativity of others out of your emotional field. Maybe this requires avoiding certain people or limiting time online. On the flip side, be intentional about staying connected to those people who “fill your cup” rather than drain it.

4. Embrace discomfort. (You can’t grow without it.)

Research shows that difficult emotions are important for us to grow and flourish. So if you’ve been challenged by all that 2020 has thrown at you, embrace those uncomfortable emotions as part and parcel of what is required for you to grow into the full quota of the person you have within you to be. Adversity introduces us to ourselves. Reframe your current problems as indispensable opportunities to nurture strengths and discover within yourself whole realms of courage, compassion, creativity and strength that may otherwise have lain dormant. 

5. Connect to your spiritual self.  

Albert Einstein once observed that the one common thread the most influential people share is that “they have first been aligned first with their spiritual selves and only then with their physical selves.”

Being grounded in the spiritual dimension of who you are enables you to face your challenges from a place of faith, rather than fear. While this may not remove your problems, it changes your relationship to them. This not only helps to rein in the tendency to catastrophize worst case scenarios (which just make you anxious and stifle your ability to think clearly), but it expands your bandwidth to approach your challenges with more calm, creativity and courage—the very attributes that set the most successful people apart from the pack. 

How would you speak, behave, interact, live and lead today if you were operating from faith over fear? Then notice how that shifts your outlook, your motions, your actions and your interactions. If it improves your day even by just a little bit, do the same tomorrow.

Everyone admires someone who is self-assured. Something about the way they hold themselves, the way they speak, and the self-assured coolness with which they act attracts us to them. They entice us. They enchant and inspire us.

The goal is to recognise the difference between genuine and phoney self-assurance. The former is based on consistent practice. The latter receives no support.

True confidence is demonstrated when you trust in yourself yet are modest enough to seek assistance when necessary. Fake confidence would be when you act arrogantly cause you believe you know everything and are superior to others. True self-confidence grows from deliberate action. Fake self-assurance clings to discourse.

Here are three behaviours that can help you boost your self-esteem. They are based on what self-assured people do.

Have Faith in your Ability to “Figure Things Out.”

As previously said, no one has it all figured out, but what distinguishes confident people from others is their belief in their capacity to figure it out. Your self-belief is what feeds your confidence.

Do not confuse believing with pretending. Believing is based on one’s sense of oneself. The impression of others is the basis of deception. You are daring and modest to acknowledge that you don’t know anything when you are based on self-belief. That’s why people who are feigning confidence are so obvious: they’re changeable and arrogant. Everyone can see right through their lies.

Prepare for Unexpected Situations.

Going into a crisis unprepared is a show of immaturity and ignorance, not confidence. And anyone who professes to have it all figured out and attempts to create an aura of invincibility is faking it. The truth is that no one has everything figured out. Confident people are prepared to accept this and lessen it by devising a strategy. They do research. They make inquiries. They hone their skills. They are preparing for what is to come.

Seek Discomfort and Accept Failure

You will not grow if you stay in your comfort zone, therefore if you want to build your confidence, make it a practice to immerse yourself in new situations that would make you feel uncomfortable. Confident individuals do not avoid change; rather, they constantly pursue it because they understand that discomfort fosters confidence. They recognise that there is no guarantee of success — but they are fine with failure because they understand that failure is only a roadblock along the route.

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey, is classed as the No.1 most influential business book of the Twentieth Century, and I feel it’s more than worthy of a revisit.

A long, long, long time before podcasts I would listen to the CD constantly as I drove. It had such a positive impact on me back in the day, hope you enjoy this short recap.

Over the years my life has been centred upon mindset development. And, as I built my construction company to over 50 sub-contractors I soon realised I needed to understand, motivate and lead others.

Eventually I did improve, nonetheless, I appreciated it would be a never-ending quest of continuous improvement to master human behaviour. And one I’m still passionately following.

The Emotional Bank Account!

Of course, knowledge, expertise, and know-how of your chosen profession is paramount to your success, and there’s little I can share in improving the tasks you implement every day, you know your business.

But, do you truly maintain the correct interpersonal skills with your customers, workforce or family? Is your emotional bank account running in the black or is it deep in the red?

Before Stephen R. Covey reveals the 7 Habits he goes deep into the expectations of implementing the habits, if they are followed diligently.

The key expectations of creating the habits…

  • Improved self-confidence.
  • Improved relationships.
  • Improved capacity to influence others.
  • Renew your spirit of adventure.

He makes it very clear, his programme is not a quick-fix, it’s an evolution; that is, if you’re willing to pay the price by learning, teaching and doing.

He would have cringed from the overuse of the term ‘life hack’ these days. There are no shortcuts to self-improvement. There is no quick fix to living your life of purpose.

In much the same tone as Dr. Wayne Dyer’s, ‘If you change the way you look at things the things you look at change’ quote. Covey uses the term of changing ‘your paradigm’, this slight shift in the way you think about things will have a dramatic effect upon your life.

Think of how you are using your emotional bank account – The Bank Of You PLC? There’s been much work on the benefits of psychological contracts, and if it interests you dig deep, there’s plenty of information out there.

But for now, Covey’s definition of an emotional bank account is where we make ’emotional’ deposits and withdrawals day in and day out. Kind of obvious, but have you noticed how many people ignore these principles?

Every interaction you have has an effect on how others treat you. From the perceptions of your customers, employees, spouse, to your children.

Imagine every time you are unkind, insensitive, and dishonest you’ll be making a withdrawal from ‘the bank’ (As if you would:).

And, every time you deliver more than you promise, act kindly and generously you are building up your ’emotional account’. Simple hey?

Okay, there will be times no matter how kind and considerate you are where people will deceive and try to humiliate you. That’s their ‘account’ terminated.

But for you, you must continue to build up your account, there’s no other way than making lasting goodwill deposits.

When it comes to personal finance, there are basically two types of habits: wealth-building habits, and wealth-diminishing habits. In other words, every financial decision you make will either move you closer to wealth, or further from it.

So, it stands to reason that the more wealth-building habits you adopt, the more likely you are to become wealthy. I mean, if you only ever make financial decisions that have been proven to make people rich, then you should end up rich too, right?

In theory, yes.

But here’s the thing, while it’s easy to talk about wealth-building habits, actually adopting them requires a whole lot of discipline and consistency.

Beyond that, with a seemingly endless amount of bad financial advice out there, the lines between good financial habits and bad financial habits have gotten a little blurry. And that’s exactly why I decided to write this article.

In this post, I am going to lay out 10 of the top financial habits that have been proven to help people build wealth; the wise, and honest way.

In other words, I’m not talking about the kind of wealth that requires all sorts of risk, stabbing friends in the back, or leveraging yourself to the hilt. More often than not, that just leads to financial (or relational) misery. Rather, the habits in this article are meant to build wealth, and a meaningful financial legacy over the course of your entire life.

So, if you’re in this financial game for the long haul, and that all sounds good to you, then keep reading.

1. Set Better Financial Goals

One of the things I have found throughout my personal finance journey, is that most people have a general idea of their financial goals. That said, very few people actually write them down and clearly define a timeline in which they would like to achieve said goals.

For instance, it’s normal to hear someone say, ‘I want to be a millionaire’. But, the problem with goals like this is that they lack definition and clarity.

I mean, if you want to be a millionaire, what’s your timeline for achieving that goal? Also, what kind of steps are you going to take on a consistent basis in order to achieve it?

A better goal would look something like this:

“Within the next 15 years, I am going to have a net worth over a million dollars. In order to achieve this goal, I am going to get out of debt in the next six months, and invest a minimum of $3,500 per month in mutual funds with an average annual return over the last 10 years of at least 10%.”

Seriously, between the first goal and the second, which person would you expect to actually become a millionaire? I would bet on the second person.

Plain and simple, if you want to build wealth, you need to get in the habit of setting better, clearly-defined financial goals.

2. Live On A Budget

Budgeting is one of the most important wealth-building habits you can adopt, because it is your daily and monthly plan for achieving your financial goals. It is also your guide for when it comes to making sound financial decisions.

I can personally attest to the power of budgeting, because the day my wife and I decided to get on a budget, we were in $34K of debt, with a net worth of somewhere around -$25,000. (Yeah, I don’t love telling this part of the story, but it’s the truth.) On a better note, after living on a very strict budget over the next 12 months, we got completely out of debt and increased our net worth by almost $75K.

Now, I know that isn’t what you would consider ‘wealthy’, but if you take what we were able to do over the course of a year, and extrapolate it over the course of 10, 20, or 30 years, it turns into some serious wealth. And seriously, it all boils down to sitting down with a budget every day, tracking your expenses, and checking-in and refocusing on your financial goals.

That’s why living on a budget is one wealth-building habit you need to master.
